About Us

CAPER is a joint project between the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association (ASDSA) and the Northwestern Department of Dermatology.

ASDSA is a 501(c)(6) organization dedicated to advocacy for patient safety. Over 6400 board certified dermatologists belong to ASDSA, and those members are committed to safely delivering dermatologic surgery to patients. The Northwestern Department of Dermatology comprises board certified dermatologists, clinicians and researchers also dedicated to patient safety and medical research.

We are a group of dermatologists and researchers committed to improving safety outcomes.

Goal

By gathering adverse events associated with procedures, CAPER improves safety monitoring for dermatologic cutaneous procedures via early detection of problems or adverse events that may be occurring widely. Our goals include:

  1. Improved safety monitoring for dermatologic surgery
  2. Identification of practice or education gaps associated with AEs
  3. Identification of risk factors and collection of longitudinal information that can be helpful for understanding the incidence and prevalence of AEs

About CAPER

The Cutaneous Procedures Adverse Events Reporting (CAPER) Registry is a patient safety database.

It is a voluntary national reporting registry that collects data on adverse events that occur during/as a result of dermatologic procedures including skin cancer surgery, laser, and cosmetic procedures.

It is open to reporting by dermatologists and non-dermatologist physicians and their staff.

The CAPER Registry is supervised by board-certified dermatologists, clinicians, and researchers. It is run by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association (ASDSA) and Northwestern University’s Department of Dermatology

Confidentiality

CAPER is both confidential and secure. Only CAPER staff have access to data reported to the registry. When reported, data is de-identified, and any identifying information pertaining to the patient or reporter is removed.
